To him, it appeared \u201ca game for idlers\u201d \u2013 a leisurely indulgence far removed from urgency or purpose.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">He recounts this now with an easy laugh, the kind that accompanies the recognition of how profoundly one\u2019s certainties can shift.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Years later, firmly established as a legal practitioner and lecturer in Nairobi, the game returned \u2013 this time through the quiet influence of friendship. Colleagues had taken to golf, and in 2005 he and his wife, Mbuli, joined Thika Sports Club. For Kibaya, however, participation remained at a distance. Having lost his sight at the age of 22 following a sudden medical complication linked to chloroquine treatment, golf was not something he imagined himself playing. Instead, he occupied the periphery: present, supportive, but disengaged. Yet for Kibaya, hearing second-hand accounts of a sighted professional\u2019s blindfolded success did little to inspire confidence. They were, like him, visually impaired \u2013 and they played. Not tentatively, not experimentally, but with fluency and evident joy.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThat was when it all clicked,\u201d he recalls. \u201cWhen I saw that they could do it \u2013 and loved it \u2013 I had no reason to doubt anymore.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">From that moment, hesitation gave way to commitment. He sought coaching, embraced the discipline, and never looked back.<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Learning a Game Never Seen<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Even before he picked up a club, Kibaya had developed an intuitive sensitivity to the game. Early attempts were predictably difficult \u2013 missed balls, heavy strikes, misjudged contact \u2013 but persistence, coupled with patient guidance from coaches, caddies, and friends, gradually yielded fluency.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe grip, the stance, the swing,\u201d he explains. \u201cThose are the fundamentals. Once you begin to understand them, everything else starts to follow.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">For a blind golfer, however, these fundamentals demand heightened sensory acuity. The hands must \u201csee\u201d what the eyes cannot; the body must detect and correct deviations that would otherwise be visually apparent.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou have to be very sensitive,\u201d he says. \u201cVery attentive \u2013 to your stance, your distance from the ball, your backswing, your follow-through. And controlling your body movement \u2013 that is often the hardest part.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Trust as Technique<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Central to Kibaya\u2019s development was trust \u2013 both in himself and in others. Golf, for him, is necessarily collaborative. Each shot becomes not merely a physical act, but the culmination of analysis and trust.<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">A Life Reframed<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Kibaya\u2019s journey into golf cannot be separated from the broader arc of his life. Losing his sight at 22 was a profound rupture, but one he met with determination. Rehabilitation at the Thika School for the Blind equipped him with tools for independence, while his intellectual discipline propelled him deeper into the study and practice of law.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Over time, he built a distinguished career as a legislative counsel, law lecturer, legal practitioner, chartered arbitrator and mediator, culminating in his appointment in 2021 as the first blind judge of Kenya\u2019s Court of Appeal. Alongside this professional trajectory, he cultivated a rich personal life \u2013 as a husband, father, poet, author, and active member of his faith community.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21843 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edgagolf.com\/profiles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/KL-on-the-fairway-e1780646386226-731x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"735\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Golf entered this already full life not as a diversion, but as an extension \u2013 a new domain in which resilience, discipline, and imagination could find expression.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">To his already remarkable curriculum vitae, he added a word still uncommon in Kenya, particularly among persons with disabilities: &#8220;golfer&#8221;.<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>The Game Within<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Over the years, Kibaya reduced his handicap to an impressive 25, often teeing off at dawn to accommodate the demands of his judicial duties. Today, he plays less competitively, favouring instead the contemplative rhythm of a round shared with a friend \u2013 or undertaken alone.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt takes you away from everything,\u201d he says. \u201cYou are out there in the fresh air, the birds singing. I leave my phone in the car. Each step, each decision, each adjustment contributes to a continuous internal dialogue \u2013 one that is as much about presence as performance.<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Expanding the Fairway<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">Kibaya is acutely aware of the rarity of his position.
