GEORGE THE FIRST AND A DANISH PLAY CREATE GREAT SCRIPT AT SWEDISH INVITATIONAL

Event report by Ben Evans of Cutting Edge Golf

There was plenty of drama including a sudden death play-off on the last day of the 2017 Swedish Invitational Golf Challenge at Bokskogen Golf Klubb, as England’s George Lee Groves and Denmark’s Christian Ström were victorious in the Category 1 and Category 2 competitions respectively.

See all the leading scores via Golfbox. After the sunshine of day two some slight drizzle in the final round kept the players on their toes in this impressive EDGA tournament. The leading golfers in Category 1 played consistently and Denmark’s Stefan Mörkholt was able to maintain his 5-shot lead until he arrived at the 11th, where his quadruple bogey changed the whole chase.

Contenders George Lee Groves and Sweden’s Johan Kammerstad were galvanised. Arriving at the 18th, George and Stefan were even, but a great par by George and a bogey for Stefan ended a superb contest on the final green. George shot a 73 (+2) for his final round and for the sixth time the Swedish Invitational have a new champion; George Lee Groves, who was very moved and thanked everybody for his first visit to Sweden. Niclas Viktor, FIFH’s own player from Malmö, came in 5th place; ahead of him were Kammerstad (third), and England’s Mike Gays in fourth.

Meanwhile, Christian Ström from Denmark seized the day to become winner of Category 2 after a dramatic finale. After 54 holes he was tied with Sweden’s Jesper Gutke, with fellow Swedes Felix Norrman and Matilda Jonsson just one shot behind. Such was the excitement that any one of these four players could have grabbed the title. As it was, Christian and Jesper played a sudden death hole and both launched their tee shots near ‘out of bounds’. Christian Ström found his ball and that sealed the win with a bogey.

The competition was praised by the 46 players who came from 11 countries and for the first time the tournament had a mix of both category 1 and 2 players. Bokskogen President Peter Kollert spoke warmly to the players and offered a welcome for them all to come back. Bokskogen GC and FIFH have now started preparations for the next tournament.
