Mark Gibson reigns supreme in 4th edition of the EDGA-Terramar Open for Wheelchair Golfers

Event report by Ben Evans of Cutting Edge Golf

After the first round of the IV EDGA-Terramar Open for Wheelchair Golfers was so competitive and the tournament set up so well, it was a great shame for all involved that the second round was cancelled due to non-stop rain (first round scores counting as final).

The event, held at Club de Golf Terramar, in Sitges (Spain), was shaping up well in round one despite first-day rain over the attractive and challenging coastal course.

Major congratulations to Northern Ireland’s Mark Gibson in winning both the Gross and Nett competition (19 Gross points and 37 Nett points) after a largely faultless first round which might have been even better but for a few putts that stubbornly stayed out.

Mark was chased all the way by the Netherlands’ Richard Kluwen (18 Gross, 35 Nett). Sebas Lorente was 3rd in Gross (12 points) and Cormac McAdam (Ireland) was 3rd in Nett (34 points).

The golf course offered superb conditions – the Ladies’ European Tour Championship was held recently at CG Terramar and the fairways, greens and bunkers were in perfect shape.

Some 15 players teed it up from 10 different countries, including Spain, France, Germany, Ireland, United Kingdom, Portugal, Finland, Netherlands, Switzerland and Israel.

Mark Gibson said of his victory: “I have been able to enjoy the Terramar course once again. It was a pity not being able to play on the second day due to the weather, especially when it seems that it is not very often that they have two rainy days in a row here.

“Hopefully, next year I will be able to come back. I would like to thank everybody who has made it possible to stage the EDGA-Terramar Open for Wheelchair Golfers, which is the most important golf event every year for wheelchair golfers.”

Runner-up Richard Kluwen said: “I am very happy with my second place because I played very well. Mark simply played better than me so he is definitely deserving of the win. I guess it could have been a good fight between Mark and myself, and even with Sebas coming from behind, but we can do nothing against the weather!”

European Tour star Pablo Larrazábal is an Ambassador of the tournament. He said: “For me, it is a huge honour to be the Ambassador of a tournament like the EDGA-Terramar Open for Wheelchair Golfers. It should be definitely encouraging for any golf player (and so it is for me) to see these guys playing off the tees with their Paragolfers and facing any inconveniences they may find on the course as if they did not exist.

“They are an example to all of us. Hopefully next year I will be able to be with all of them at the CG Terramar to give them all my support in person, very especially to my friend Sebas.”

This fourth edition of the EDGA-Terramar Open for Wheelchair Golfers was sponsored by The Mail Company and Covinil (as was the case with the three previous tournaments) and with the help of several brands including Srixon-Cleveland-XXio, Coca-Cola, Finca Viladellops, By Pepa, Sisley Paris, Rest, Pic-Nic, Gramen, and thanks to the special help and support of the Catalan Golf Federation and the Club de Golf Terramar.
