EVENT REPORT - HandiGolf Bornholm 2016

Mette Wegge Lynggaard is the winner of HandiGolf Bornholm 2016

By Jesper Hviid

Sunshine Island lived up to its name as the sixth edition of Handigolf Bornholm were played. There was only a brisk wind as an excuse not to get a good score when 45 players from four countries competed in all the island's four lanes. The players were evenly distributed on four rows with players from Iceland, Sweden, Germany and Denmark giving the tournament once again an international flavour.

The tournament is the result of many years of good cooperation between Team Bornholm, three of the local golf clubs, DHIF and Danish Golf Union. The players with official golf-hcp were divided into A, B and C series, where A and B series played a Stableford tournament over 3 x 18 holes, while C range played 3 x 9 holes. There was also a tournament offering to start-ups and severe physical disabilities without official golf-hcp which was completed by eight players on the par-3 courses and putting greens.

A row was unexpectedly won by Handigolf-national player and DM-winning 2015 Mette Wegge Lynggaard from Trelleborg GK. Mette played to 102 points and also won the gross prize, while Gabrielle Lorentz from Germany and Johnny Granberg from Sweden, no. 2 and 3. B-series was won by Vagn Holm from Dejbjerg GK (100 Stableford points) while Preben Hansen from Bornholm GK in the C series scored all 63 points on the 3 x 9 holes.

Internet newspaper www.bornholm.nu was tournament and prize sponsor, and they have already announced that they will sponsor next year's tournament. The local clubs had arranged for volunteers to attend the event and their efforts and positive and welcoming attitude was appreciated by all.

Good preparation for the European Championships
The tournament was a good test for Denmark's Mette Wegge Lynggaard as she will soon participate in the individual European Championship, which is played on Barbora Golf resort in the Czech Republic.

Here Mette will accompany eight of our top men's players and there is high expectation for Danish top rankings in both women's and men's competitions. Stefan Mørkholt from Gyttegård GK will be defending his European champion title. The European Championships takes place from 18/6 - 22/6 as stroke play over 3 x 18 holes, and there are 102 registered players. The Danish players' efforts in the tournament will be something new and can be followed on www.golfbox.dk
